NB-IoT technology

NB-IoT in a nutshell:

NB-IoT stands for Narrow Band Internet of Things and is a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technology that is specifically designed for IoT devices and applications. It is part of the 4G and 5G cellular standards and operates within licensed spectrum bands. NB-IoT enables efficient communication for devices with low data rates, extended battery life, and reliable connections in challenging environments.

Key Features of NB-IoT in GPS collars:

  • Alternative GPS collar communication method with optimized energy efficiency and data utilization.
  • Compared to traditional satellite communication methods like IRIDIUM or GLOBALSTAR, IoT has no ongoing airtime costs, and for a small fee, data transmission is covered for 5-10 years.
  • The need to manage GPS collar airtime fees is significantly reduced.
  • Utilization of LTE infrastructure (NB-IoT or LTE-M).
  • Supports large data packets, which enables the transmission of activity data and up to 59 GPS positions per message.
  • Facilitates low-energy data transmissions, allowing devices like GPS collars to operate for extended periods with minimal battery power.
  • Robust security: uses the security frameworks of cellular networks.
  • Cellular coverage needs to be present in your study area.
  • If a collared animal leaves the coverage area, data will not be available. However, upon return to the coverage area all stored data will begin transmitting.
  • If a mortality event occurs outside of the coverage area an alert notification will not be possible.
  • IoT communication is not available in all countries or areas, please check the map below.
